Born in Illinois, Jenn Zukowski Boughn has been living in gorgeous Boulder, Colorado since she was about one-and-a-half years old. Her mother was a Dance Education major at both U of I and SIU in Illinois when she was pregnant with Jenn, so she always jokes that she’s been dancing since before she was born! She took Creative Movement and basic Modern Dance from her mother as a child until seventh grade, when she followed a friend into an audition for The Sound of Music, got understudy for the lead, and has loved the theatre ever since.
Jenn was heavily involved with theatre through her junior- and high-school years, as well as becoming a storyteller in a professional capacity at the tender age of fourteen. Many school plays, story hours, and birthday parties later, Jenn took off in excellent choir and theatre training at Boulder High. During her high school years, she performed with the Play Ground Theatre, a locally touring children’s troupe that normally didn’t cast such young actors. Throughout, Jenn harbored a steady practice and deep love for the Fantasy Literature genre, and wrote and read compulsively whenever she wasn’t in rehearsals.
At the University of Colorado at Boulder, Jenn furthered training in her dual fields by studying and later earning degrees in both English Lit and Acting, producing some great performances, garnering awards both in academic pursuits and praise for community productions, and having such honors as being published for the first time and attending the prestigious ACTF festival.
Just post-graduation, Jenn took her first Stage Combat course from a local instructor of the SAFD. From day one, she was hooked! More classes, assistant instruction, and a couple Renaissance Festivals later, she found her theatrical niche. During this same time, she became involved with the Frequent Flyers Productions Aerial Dance company, practicing with both swords and trapezes simultaneously for a few years.
Since college and those sword-trapeze years, Jenn went on to earn her MFA in Writing and Poetics from Naropa University, appeared in several more local professional shows, from the Colorado Shakespeare Festival to the award-winning Trouble Clef Theatre, to her own teensy group called Five Funny Faces. She also taught gymnastics to preschool age through adolescent children, and joined a martial arts group called the Genki Kai.
These days, Jenn lives in Boulder with her husband (also a martial artist and movement professional), cat, and parrot. She’s an English and Theatre adjunct professor at Metro State College of Denver, and also teaches writing at the University of Denver’s University College. She has been as of now a Stage Combat practitioner for ten years, and a martial artist for eight. She still loves her Dr. Who, her swordfighting, and her aerial apparati. Jenn teaches, performs, writes and directs on an independent and professional capacity in the Boulder-Denver metro area.
