Moira Anderson Allen has been writing professionally for nearly 25 years. She has authored six books, including the award-winning Coping with Sorrow on the Loss of Your Pet (Alpine Publications, 1996). Her Allworth titles include Writing.com: Creative Internet Strategies to Advance Your Writing Career (Second Edition forthcoming May 2003), The Writer's Guide to Queries, Pitches and Proposals (2001), and Starting Your Career as a Freelance Writer (forthcoming in September 2003). Her articles have appeared in such publications as Entrepreneur, Entrepreneur's Home Office, Cats, Romantic Homes, Writer's Digest, and ASPCA's Animal Watch. Allen currently writes two monthly columns for The Writer, and has also served as a columnist for Entrepreneur's Home Office, Inkspot, and Allpets.com.
In addition to her freelancing experience, Allen has held a variety of positions in the publishing industry. From 1985 to 1987, she served as editor of Dog Fancy, earning the magazine its first Dog Writer's Association of America award for "best all-breed magazine" in its 15 years of publication to date. In 1988 she joined the RAND Corporation (a nationally known "think-tank") as an editorial marketing assistantant, and later served as a consluting editor to the firm, editing various international and domestic white papers and public policy documents.
As a corporate editorial consultant, Allen has developed, designed, and edited corporate newsletters and research documents. She has also worked as a technical writer and editor for the Department of Computer Research and Technology at the National Institutes of Health.
Allen is a highly experienced computer user and desktop publisher, operating a desktop- and self-publishing firm from 1987 to 1997. Allen is also a proficient Internet user, offering a Web page for writers and another on pet loss (http://www.pet-loss.net). She is the former managing editor of the now-defunct Inkspot Web site and Inklings newsletter (previously one of the leading writing sites on the Web).
In addition to her writing expertise, Allen holds an M.Ed. in counseling from Boston University. She has given several workshops and seminars on a variety of subjects, and has taught both freelance and college-level writing courses at several Washington state colleges. She has also spoken at a number of writing conferences.
