Darryl Wimberley
taught screenwriting at the University of Texas at Austin and is
currently a full-time author and screenwriter.Born in St. Augustine,
Florida, he entered the United States Air Force Academy following his
graduation in 1967 from Lafayette County High School in Mayo, Florida.
He graduated with a bachelor of science in international affairs in
1971 and, while on active duty, completed graduate work at St. Mary¹s
University in San Antonio, Texas, receiving a master of arts degree in
English literature in 1976.
After completing his military service, he entered the graduate school
of the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed a doctor of
philosophy from the Radio-Television-Film Department. In January 1979,
he was hired as assistant regional manager for a four-state region of
cable television systems owned by Communications Properties, Inc., of
the Times-Mirror Corporation.
He returned to Austin in August 1979 to write. His first screenplay, Love Thy Father,
based on events then-current in Poland, was purchased in 1980 by
International Visions. He joined the Writers¹ Guild of America West
that same year and has since sold or optioned more than a dozen feature
films and a television series. From 1981 until 1993, he taught graduate
and advanced undergraduate screenwriting at the Radio-Television-Film
Department at the University of Texas at Austin.
Today, Wimberly writes full-time and lives with his wife Doris and their two children in Austin, Texas.
